Baylys Beach Clifftop

Kauri Coast

The cliffs around Chases Gorge and along Baylys Beach are a feature. Over aeons, they have been shaped and eroded by the environment. Before the beach access at the end of Sea View Road, turn left onto Ocean View Terrace. There is a nondescript grass reserve on the left side of the gorge with a track to the top of the cliffs.

Walking up only takes a few minutes, and the views are superb. The sandstone is also a fantastic shade of yellow, at least in the stormy light we had. From the top, you can continue along the track through coastal scrub to the south and exit to the beach after a few minutes. Return along the coast, looking for the exposed fossilised ancient kauri forest.

Baylys Beach is a section of Ripiro Beach on Northland's Kauri Coast. Take Baylys Coast Road from State Highway 12. It is about 10 minutes drive from Daragaville. There is also a nearby commercial campground and freedom camping.
